Internet Harassment

Our lives have been enriched with the creation of the Internet. The world has become a much smaller, more interconnected place thanks to the social networking aspects of the Internet. However, there are downsides to it, namely the addictive nature of the Internet that can hinder your social life or physical activity – cyber bullying is one of the worst disadvantages of this phenomenon.

Today many are up in arms over cyber-crime, but authorities are at a loss as to how to keep up with the pace of criminals who are utilizing this means of communication to steal identities, post false entries, and just, plain harass individuals to the point where they are either embarrassed, harmed, or suffer financially from this type of bullying. This often happens with children who are less capable of dealing with this type of behavior than adults who are willing to take action to stop it.

This type of criminal activity can take many forms. Emails containing threats, hateful comments, sexual innuendos, or messages sent in excess are all types of Internet harassment. Posting misleading or malicious information for the purpose of embarrassing or harming another individual, or soliciting others to participate in unacceptable behavior are all types of cyber bullying. Students with cell phones which give them access to Internet sites has dramatically increased the difficulty of containing and repress the issue.

A favorite of cyber-bullies is to release personal information about an individual which then traces to the real name or address of a victim. They also love to defame and ridicule the target and may also threaten them with harm. Boys begin bullying behavior in about the 2nd grade, girls catch on in middle school. These are all illegal activities and, when caught, carry significant legal consequences.

You can prevent or even stop this harassment. Begin by avoiding any sites that known bullying occurs. Additionally, changing accounts and phone numbers will often curtail harassment. However, to end this type of behavior it is important that the cyber-bully be caught. In order to do this, you have to find the IP address from which they are conducting their campaign of terror.

Many sites use IP tracking which can not only track the exact location of the bully, but also provide the personal information required to prosecute them. Some of these sites include http://percise-ip-search.info/38/index.py which is a system that back-tracks web-based information.

You might find it hard to get the information that cyber-bullies post about you off the Internet, no matter how inaccurate and offensive it may be. Social networking sites are rife with contact and personal information, not to mention slander and possibly compromising photos and videos; while there are policies to attempt to prevent this posting, it is hard to remove stuff that’s there. This damaging information may take years to fade away for victims.

However, there are laws that are being pushed through that will help cyber bullying have real consequences; some arrests and convictions have already been made. Given the rapid development of technology, it is necessary for people to stay on their toes and protect themselves from cyber crimes. Always take every available precaution when going online.
