2008 Fabre Montmayou Malbec
2008 Fabre Montmayou Malbec “Vinas Viejas” Reserva
The 2008 Vinas Viejas was much like Herve’s acclaimed Gran Reserva, with one prominent difference. While the Gran Reserva was barrel-aged in a healthy percentage of new wood, with this unique old-vine cuvee, Herve backed off the new wood, allowed the sheer opulence of these fabulous old-vine grapes to sing their own song, not muddled or hardened by cooperage.
Herve contacted his importer. Together, they agreed to ship an entire container of Vinas Viejas Malbec to the West Coast. Not only would the container be refrigerated, but they would pay to have an electronic temperature recorder set inside the container before it was loaded and sealed. The provenance of this wonderful ancient vine Malbec would be impeccable.
The wine arrived in perfect shape. The maximum temperature since the container was sealed was 62. The low was 54.
Tasting Notes from the WineAccess Travel Log
2008 Fabre Montmayou Malbec “Vinas Viejas” Reserva
“Dark purple/black color to the edge. Explosive, warm aromas of cassis and crushed dark red fruits, lots of intensity. Deep and rich on the palate with a fine tight kernel of cassis-like fruit, bracketed by fine old vine acidity and vibrancy. Absolutely delicious now, but will continue to age gracefully for 2-3 years.”
