What to know about termites

There are plenty of misconceptions about termites, one of the most enigmatic of insects around, and rightly so; termites mostly avoid light and are hardly ever seen. That is, until you open an old cupboard one day only to find that the wooden panels are all infested with them, or that a piece of your wooden ceiling falls down, and you discover it is nothing but a hollow patchwork within.

Termites look somewhat like ants but they are actually disimilar to ants; here’s how to know what do termites look like. Perhaps the main difference is that termites eat wood and therefore may pose a threat to your house; ants don’t eat wood (except maybe carpenter ants).

Not all termite species are wood pests; most termite species are found in tropical countries and can only survive in jungles and forests. So you won’t be seeing many of these species unless you actually go look for them. The few species that present problems are mainly subterranean termites from the Coptotermes genus. If you own a backyard and find that cardbox boxes or wooden beams have been affected by termites, you should act immediately and get a pest control operator to come and have a look; the termites could be in the process of chomping down your house!
