Owning A Horse At Christmas
Owning a horse can be a lot of hard work but also good fun. I used to love the cold frosty days when you ride out and you can hear the sound of the frost crunching underneath you.
Now on one particular Christmas it had been particularly cold and the weather too bad to ride. On the night after Boxing day it snowed, looking out of the window at all the pure white fields and trees I could not wait to go out riding. I told my friend to give me an hour before coming to the stables so I could tack up the horses ready, oh boy! Was he in for a surprise.
The stable was only a two minute walk from my parents house where we were staying for the holidays, and as I walked along the road I could not help smiling to myself, I was so excited, I had it all worked out. The horses were in the stables so I gave them a quick brush down then tacked them both up, that was the easy bit.
I grabbed the bags that I had brought with me and tipped them out onto the floor, tinsel and baubles everywhere. The horses, Harcombe and Lady looked at it all, then they looked at me as if to say, “no-way are we wearing that,” giggling at the thought of the finished product I started wrapping tinsel around their necks, legs, tails and saddles.
As I was standing back admiring my handy-work I heard my friend arrive. Diving out of the stables I told him to give me five more minutes and then I will be ready. I went back in and grabbed the last items to the horses costumes, hats with bells on. It took me over half an hour to get these hats on them but I did it and started to lead them out, “here we come ready or not,” I shouted to my friend.
Well his face was a picture, “you have to be joking,” he said, “I am not going anywhere with them looking like that,” “don’t be such a grouch,” I said as I started to mount up and walk away, soon I could hear the bells ringing on Lady’s hat behind me, I turned around to see them trotting to catch me up. I burst out laughing, I forgot to tell my friend that I had decorated his hat as well, what a funny sight it was. All of the neighbors came out to see us and the children loved it. Looking back at that day it makes me smile and realize that owning a horse experience was a very special thing.
