One of the best things about being a teenager is that you finally get to drive a car once you get your driver’s license. But at the same time, one of the worst things about being a teenager is that car insurance is a lot more expensive for you than for a person in the middle of their twenties. The fact is that teen accidents are extremely high compared to the rest of the driving population. This translates in to anywhere from 100% to 250% higher premiums for young drivers, and perhaps even more.

In 2010 there are expected to be over 400.000 accidents involving young driver, where 5000 of them unfortunately will result in fatalities, if statistics from 2009 are any indicator of future accidents. So how do you go about differentiating yourself from the rest of population at your same age?

The insurance companies want safe drivers, so driving safely should be your first priority. Stay out trouble, and always wear your seatbelt. Apart from that, you will be rewarded for driving a safe car, because if you are unlucky enough to get in to an accident the probabilities of you getting an injury is smaller. You are also best off buying an older car, as new and fast cars will mean higher premiums. The risk of you crashing in high speed is bigger than in low speed where you have more control, so the more horsepower in a car, the more expensive the policy gets.

Another thing the insurance agent will look at is your grades. Studies have shown that those with good grades wind up in fewer accidents than those with bad grades. It all comes down to risk of being irresponsible and students that behave responsible in school do better in traffic. So, finding cheap car insurance for teenagers is all about showing that the risk of you crashing is less than for others your age. Teen car accidents are simply too expensive for the companies to overlook, so differentiate yourself by showing that you are a mature driver.
