Getting Accustomed to Hearing Aids

For those who have chosen to get ear hearing aids they will find it has opened the world up to them again. Most patients hearing loss occurred over a period of years, so the ordinary sounds of everyday living just gradually disappeared. Upon getting their hearing aids and getting home, some patients may become startled and apprehensive for a few days when hearing their home and neighborhood sounds again. The everyday sound of the refrigerator kicking on and off, for example, can cause apprehension, because the patient hasn’t heard it kick on in possibly years, and now suddenly these sounds are foreign and could lead them to think the refrigerator is going to tear up at any time. They may even check it out a few times before allowing themselves to be convinced it is, in fact, a normal sound. The apprehension should start to go away within a few days as they settle into the normal sounds of home again.

Once the apprehension goes away, they will start gaining more confidence. Suddenly, the patient who has been avoiding friends, or trips to the mall (because they don’t want to hurt their friends feelings or feel embarrassed when they misunderstand what is being said, or are afraid they won’t hear a car horn or a siren), will start socializing and getting out when they realize they CAN hear again. Hearing aids can give them a renewed confidence and self-assurance they haven’t had in a long time, and can lead them to feel more a part of society, less isolated; like they’re living again!
