I’m a dog lover who is getting older and somewhat less active. I’m retired and can no longer pay someone to run with my dogs. I hit balls with a racquet out in the yard to get my dogs running, but I’m thinking about the future. When my oldest dog passes, I’m in search for a dog whose exercise needs are less.

I want to protest that I’m not a human couch potato, but I have some medical issues that make it more reasonable for my exercise to be in the gym rather than outdoors, especially in high pollen season. I suspect that many older Americans love having dogs, but they may be less active and reside in smaller homes with little or no yard. So I’ve been researching which breeds seem to thrive on less exercise.

With that statement out of the way, it seems that the Great Pyrenees, Shih Tzu, Saint Bernard, Pekingese, and the Bolognese are satisfied with minimal 20-30 minutes walks a couple of times a day. Who would think that large dogs like the Pyrenees and Saint Bernard would fit this criterion, but apparently they do.
