Hand saws are of two kinds—rip and crosscut. The first is for sawing along- the grain, the direc­tion in which wood splits easiest, the other for sawing across the grain. The necessity for having a saw for each direction of cutting with reference to the grain is clearly shown in Fig. 7 The ripsaw is really nothing more than a lot of little narrow chisels so arranged that they cut, one after the other, in rapid succession, the cutting edge, like that of the chisel, being on the front of the teeth. To cut across the grain with a rip­saw would be to split the wood as in A, Fig. 7. Cutting with the grain is shown in B. The teeth of the crosscut saw are so sharpened, that the cutting edges are on the sides of the teeth instead of in front. Figure 8 shows the shape of both rip and crosscut saw teeth.

Both of these saws are sharpened with exactly the same tools, the differences in the teeth being due to the difference in angle at which the file is held in the process.

Sharpening a saw is considered a difficult thing to learn, so difficult that it is not necessary to go into a lengthy description for beginners. It may be worth while, however, to state the steps that are taken in putting a saw in order. The beginner ought to know how the tools are sharpened, even if he must attain more experience before attempting to sharpen them. First, the teeth are jointed. This is done by running a flat file along the length of the saw so as to cut down any teeth that project farther than others (Fig. 9). Second, the teeth are filed, a three-cornered file being used, the kind of saw determining the angle or angles at which it is held with reference to the side of the saw. The ripsaw is filed straight across (Fig. 10).

Getting the House Built

If you would rather build a house than buy one, there are several ways to go about it. You can get an architect to plan the house and get a contractor to build it; this should result in just the “perfect” house for you, but can be expensive unless you are more than careful.

Hire the plans drawn and be your own contrac­tor, letting the work out to sub-contractors, as con­crete men, carpenters, electricians, plasterers, etc. Do this only if you have had considerable business expe­rience and have plenty of time to devote to it, as the supervision of these workmen is what you pay the general contractor to do.

You might get plans out of a magazine and pro­ceed as suggested above; or get some experienced person to help you with the plans and build part of the house yourself, hiring professional help only where necessary.

Of you could buy a lot, draw your own plans, and do the whole job yourself, with the help of your family, hiring specialized skills only where absolute­ly necessary. This is conceded to be the least interesting and most tedious part of quilt making; however, it is certainly not a step that can be hurried as blocks must be cut exact. There is no alternative to this. The very week I am writing this there came a gingham diamond clear from Montana to me in Missouri, from a woman asking, “What’s wrong with this pattern I got from a friend—it won’t make a blazing star”! And indeed it would not; the angle was too acute. Eight of them would sew together like a saucer, and no two sides of the diamonds were alike in length, the shortest varying from the longest by 5-8 inch!

In the patterns here given the angles and curves have been determined. Lengths are fairly accurate, although seam allowances may vary, and it does make a difference where a certain piece is due to fit. Two triangles, equal sides together should be cut equal, but a triangle against a square of equal length will finish a seam narrow at each end unless extra allowance is made on the triangle.

Improved health care, higher rates of literacy and self-sustaining food production has enabled India not to suffer from its huge population as much as some countries have.

According to the Missal account of Palm Sunday, “the bystanders came up and said to Peter, ‘Surely thou also art one of them, for even thy speech betrays thee.’ ”
